Additional information

Number and set of cities and measuring methods vary from year to year, and this may cause much of the inter-annual variation. The increase after 1996 is mainly due to the introduction of PM10 data into the statistics. Only for the most recent years monitoring data on fine particulates (PM10) are available to a significant extent, which are shown separately at the right-hand side of the diagram.
