Methodology:: Quality checks of the GLC2000 v1 classification for the European continent reveal large discrepencies when compared with existing high resolution European land cover databases. This new European window of the GLC2000, mapped to the global legend in order to maintain pan-European consistency, represents significant improvements in the mapping accuracy, especially in areas such as the Iberian peninsula, the UK, and Eastern Europe. A window of the GLC2000 global dataset was extracted, using European biogeographical zones, and an analysis of agreement with the CORINE 2000 (CLC2000) was conducted. The agreement with Corine was assessed by recoding both CLC2000 and GLC2000v1 to a reduced legend, compatible with the FAO Land Cover Classification System (LCCS). Disagreement was recorded where no Corine pixels agreed with a 1km GLC2000 pixel. This process identified classes within biogeographcial zones in which the GLC2000 dataset could be improved. These land cover classes were then reclassified using a combination of an NDVI time series for 2000, and a multispectral composite image for 2000, both derived from the VEGETATION satellite system. An unsupervised classification method was used to identify groups of pixels with similar seasonality and spectral properties. A combination of the CLC2000 and GLC2000 agreement pixels were used to assist class labelling. The GLC - Europe is produced the 24th March 2006.

Additional information

It does, however, represent a consistent and improved classification for the whole of the European continent, with respect to the data derived from the VEGETATION instrument. This is essential not only for management and monitoring of European ecosystems, but also, in being directly related to a global land cover product, is valuable for putting the land cover of Europe in a global context.
