EPER - The European Pollutant Emission Register

The EPER Decision is based on Article 15(3) of Council Directive 96/61/EC concerning integrated pollution prevention and control. EPER is a web-based register, which enables the public to view data on emissions to water and air of 50 key pollutants from large and medium-sized industrial point sources in the European Union. The register is hosted by the European Environment Agency. The main objective of EPER is to fulfill the publics right to know about the releases of pollutants in their neighbourhood. In addition, it gives people emissions data on a national or European scale. According to the EPER Decision, Member States have to report every three years. The first reporting year was 2001 (published in 2004) and covered 9,400 facilities in EU15, Hungary, and Norway. With 2004 being the second reporting year, the register now includes emissions to water and air of approximately 12,000 facilities in EU25 and Norway (published in 2006).
