50 years of protecting Europe's environment: Today the European Union has the most environmentally friendly arsenal of rules in the world and has done more to tackle pressing ecological problems, such as climate change, than any other major power. But it has not always been like this. Caring for the environment did not feature in the Treaty of Rome, the document that gave birth to the modern day EU. Yet environmental problems were never far away. Europe’s love affair with the car was moving into top gear, industry was busy belching out pollutants and raw sewage was being pumped into our rivers and seas.

Annual average river nitrate concentration (mg/l NO3-N) in 2008, averaged by river basin district: This map shows the mean annual concentrations of Nitrate (NO3) as mg/L NO3-N measured at Eionet-Water River monitoring stations during 2008. All data are annual means. For most countries these are based on measurements over the whole year, whereas some countries have samples only from the growing season (due to ice cover in winter)

Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of river monitoring stations included per country is given in metadata (see downloads and more info). BOD7 data has been recalculated into BOD5 data.

Up to 3-year gaps of missing values have been interpolated or extrapolated. Only complete series with no missing values after this interpolation/extrapolation are included. The number of river monitoring stations included in the analysis is noted in brackets. BOD7 data has been recalculated into BOD5 data.
