Data EEA reference grid
The grid is based on the recommendation at the 1st European Workshop on Reference Grids in 2003 and later INSPIRE geographical grid systems. For Europe and each country three vector polygon grid shape files, 1, 10 and 100 km, are available. For full Europe the 1 km vector grid is excluded for size reasons. The grids cover at least country borders and, where applicable, marine Exclusive Economic Zones v2.0, www.vliz.be/vmdcdata/marbound. Note that the extent of the grid into the marine area does not reflect the extent of the territorial waters.

Data Common European Chorological Grid Reference System (CGRS)
In year 2000 representatives of the atlas groups mapping the European vascular plants, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fungi and invertebrates agreed to use the CGRS as a common grid for species distribution mapping. The CGRS grid is modified from the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS). The MGRS itself is an alphanumeric version of a numerical UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) or UPS (Universal Polar Stereographic) grid coordinate.
