National adaptation strategies
-
EEA member countries are at different stages of preparing, developing and implementing national adaptation strategies. The development depends on the magnitude and nature of the observed impacts, assessments of current and future vulnerability and the capacity to adapt. All countries have also submitted information on their adaptation plans in their 5th National Communication to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change due on 1 January 2010. In addition, some actions and measures are increasingly being taken at regional and local levels.

New IPCC report addresses risks of extreme events and disasters
-
It is "virtually certain" that warm weather extreme events will become more frequent this century, according to a new summary report published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on 18 November. In order to explore ways of adapting to heatwaves and other extreme events potentially exacerbated in future by climate change, the IPCC has brought together a range of scientific and professional expertise.

Turning the urban challenge into an opportunity
-
Copenhagen, 2 July 2011. Up to 150 mm of rainfall in two hours – a city record since measurements began in the mid-1800s. Homes destroyed. Citizens and emergency services struggled to cope. This is one example of how excessive extreme weather events can affect a European capital – events that are expected more often under climate change.
