Information Centre Assistants - Contract Agents (Function Group III)

The Information Centre gives individual responses to external requests for information and supports the dissemination of EEA publications. It also runs a library for EEA staff with external publications and other information.

The jobholders will, in collaboration with other staff in the Information Centre (IC), be involved in a wide range of activities relating to the running of the IC and the library. The daily running tasks to be covered by these posts include:

  • Assisting the Information Centre manager in the daily running of the IC;
  • Answering internal and external requests for information, including visitors to the IC;
  • Carrying out research based environmental information searches;
  • Developing and maintaining the EEA library services, incl. acquisitions, cataloguing, loans/ returns and informing staff of new acquisitions;
  • Organising incoming material on environmental issues;
  • Responsibility for periodicals acquisition, organisation and internal dissemination;
  • Manning the agency’s stand at exhibitions where the EEA takes part;
  • Supporting other IC services when required

Long-term development activities include:

  • Support the IC manager as needed in activity planning
  • Support as needed EEA activities related to information provision for younger audiences
  • Formulate standard responses to FAQ's and other relevant environmental subjects
  • Improve the flow of information to and from the IC through the establishing and strengthening of publication exchange agreements with relevant bodies and organisations
  • Participate in European and international fora focusing on library services, e.g. Eurlib

Eligibility:


  • Education certificates and diplomas:
    • Post-secondary education attested by a diploma;
  • Range of professional experience and skills:
    • Three years' of relevant professional experience, e.g. in information centre services and/or the running and development of library services;
    • A good understanding of environmental topics and terms, preferably with a background in natural science;
    • Knowledge of the European Union and its environmental policy
    • Familiarity with environmental priorities and management practices in EEA member countries would be preferable;
    • Knowledge of EU information sources and Internet databases such as CELEX, Eudor and ECLAS would be an asset;
    • A good knowledge of Microsoft Office programmes (Word, Excel, etc.), Internet Explorer and web editing software;
    • A service-minded attitude, courtesy and cultural sensitivity to deal with clients from a wide range of countries and backgrounds;
    • Good judgement and organisational skills, ability to work in a team as well as independently and to handle several tasks simultaneously;



GENERAL CONDITIONS:

  • Citizenship of one of the Member Countries of the EEA (Member States of the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey);
  • Enjoy full rights as a citizen;
  • Have fulfilled any obligations imposed by law concerning military service;
  • Meet the educational requirements as described under "Eligibility:";
  • Have a thorough knowledge of one of the languages of the EEA Member Countries and a satisfactory knowledge of a second of these languages. Good knowledge of English would be an asset.

Selection:

The procedure comprises a pre-selection of the best qualified candidates based on the eligibility criteria in relation to the post to be filled. Pre-selected candidates will be called for an interview. The interview will be held for the most part in English.

Recruitment:

The selected candidate shall before recruitment undergo a compulsory medical examination to establish that he/she meets the standard of physical fitness necessary to perform the duties involved. The selected candidate will be employed for a limited time period not exceeding four years.
