Figure Total ammonium concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2011 in different geographical regions of Europe
The data series per region are calculated as the average of the annual mean for river monitoring stations in the region. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of river monitoring stations included per geographical region is given in parentheses. If data on total ammonium are not available, data on ammonium are included into the data series.

Figure BOD5 concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2011 in different geographical regions of Europe
The data series per region are calculated as the average of the annual mean for river monitoring stations in the region. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of river monitoring stations included per geographical region is given in parentheses. BOD7 data has been recalculated into BOD5 data.

Daviz Visualization chemical/x-pdb Percentage of urban population resident in areas where pollutant concentrations are higher than selected limit/target values
The rationale for selection of pollutant and corresponding limit/target values for CSI 004 is given in the justification for indicator selection. Only urban and sub-urban background monitoring stations have been included in the calculations. Data for Cyprus, Greece and Malta, are not included due to the geographical coverage of the Urban Audit.

Figure Total ammonium concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2011 draining to different sea regions of Europe
The sea region data series are calculated as the average of annual mean data from river monitoring stations in each sea region. The data thus represents rivers or river basins draining into that particular sea. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of river monitoring stations included per sea region is given in parentheses. If data on total ammonium are not available, data on ammonium are included into the data series.

Indicator Assessment Oxygen consuming substances in rivers (CSI 019) - Assessment DRAFT created Sep 2013
Concentrations of BOD and total ammonium have decreased in European rivers in the period 1992 to 2011 (Fig. 1), mainly due to general improvement in wastewater treatment. See also WISE interactive maps: Mean annual BOD in rivers and Mean annual Total Ammonium in rivers

Figure BOD5 concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2011 draining to different sea regions of Europe
There were no stations with consistent data series on BOD7 in rivers draining to the Arctic Ocean. BOD7 data has been recalculated into BOD5 data.

Figure Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) and total ammonium concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2011
Concentrations are expressed as annual mean concentrations. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of river monitoring stations included per country is given in metadata (see downloads and more info). BOD7 data has been recalculated into BOD5 data. If data on total ammonium are not available, data on ammonium are included into the data series.

Figure Percentage of European coastal bathing waters complying with mandatory value (or with at least sufficient quality) and meeting guide value (or with excellent quality) for the year 2012 by country
Countries arranged by the percentage of compliance with mandatory value or at least sufficient quality. Five Member States (Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg and Slovakia) and Switzerland have no coastal bathing waters. The quality classes under the New Bathing Water Directive (2006/7/EC) are jointed with compliance categories under the Bathing Water Directive (76/160/EEC).

Figure Percentage of European inland bathing waters complying with mandatory value (or with at least sufficient quality) and meeting guide values (or with excellent quality) for the year 2012 by sea region
Sea regions arranged by the percentage of compliance with mandatory value or at least sufficient quality. EU Member States, Croatia and Switzerland. No inland bathing waters are reported from three Member States (Cyprus, Malta and Romania). The quality classes under the New Bathing Water Directive (2006/7/EC) are jointed with compliance categories under the Bathing Water Directive (76/160/EEC).
