Figure Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) and total ammonium concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2011
Concentrations are expressed as annual mean concentrations. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of river monitoring stations included per country is given in metadata (see downloads and more info). BOD7 data has been recalculated into BOD5 data. If data on total ammonium are not available, data on ammonium are included into the data series.

Figure Trend in median total ammonium, total phosphorus and nitrate concentration of river water bodies, grouped by ecological status/potential class
Concentrations are expressed as a median of annual mean concentrations. Up to three-year gaps of missing values have been interpolated or extrapolated. Only complete series with no missing values after this interpolation/extrapolation are included. The number of time series/river stations is shown in parentheses. The trend for 1992 to 2010 for each of the ecological quality classes has been linearly extended to 2027 — or when the concentration level becomes negative.

Figure Total ammonium concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2010 in different geographical regions of Europe
The data series per region are calculated as the average of the annual mean for river monitoring stations in the region. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of river monitoring stations included per geographical region is given in parentheses.

Figure Total ammonium concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2010 draining to different sea regions of Europe
The sea region data series are calculated as the average of annual mean data from river monitoring stations in each sea region. The data thus represents rivers or river basins draining into that particular sea. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of river monitoring stations included per sea region is given in parentheses.

Indicator Assessment Oxygen consuming substances in rivers (CSI 019) - Assessment published Oct 2012
Concentrations of BOD and total ammonium have decreased in European rivers in the period 1992 to 2010 (Fig. 1), mainly due to general improvement in wastewater treatment. See also WISE interactive maps: Mean annual BOD in rivers and Mean annual Total Ammonium in rivers

Indicator Assessment Oxygen consuming substances in rivers (CSI 019) - Assessment DRAFT created Apr 2012
Concentrations of BOD and total ammonium have decreased in European rivers in the period 1992 to 2009 (Fig. 1), mainly due to general improvement in wastewater treatment. See also WISE interactive maps:   Mean annual BOD in rivers and Mean annual Total Ammonium in rivers

Figure Total ammonium concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2009 draining to different sea regions of Europe
Concentrations are expressed as the average of annual mean concentrations. Up to 3-year gaps of missing values have been interpolated or extrapolated. Only complete series with no missing values after this interpolation/extrapolation are included (see indicator specificatios). The number of river monitoring stations included in the analysis per sea region is noted in brackets.
