Monitoring CO2 emissions from new passenger cars in the EU: summary of data for 2011

For the second year, the EEA has collected Member
States' data on passenger car registrations, in
accordance with Regulation (EC) No 443/2009
(CO2 from cars). All Member States reported
information on CO2 emissions and the mass of cars,
together with other vehicle characteristics. This
data was used to evaluate the performance in 2011
of the new vehicle fleet, and its progress toward
meeting the CO2 emissions target of 130 gCO2/km
by 2015.

The Regulation (EC) No 443/2009 requires Member States to record information for each new passenger car registered in its territory. Every year, each Member State shall submit to the Commission all the information related to their new registrations. In particular, the following details are required for each new passenger car registered: manufacturer name, type, variant, version, make and commercial name, specific emissions of CO2, mass of the vehicle, wheel base, track width, fuel type and fuel mode. Additional information, such as type approval number, engine power and engine capacity were also submitted.
The database covers 2011 data.

Most carmakers must further improve carbon efficiency by 2015

Several carmakers need to make their fleets even more carbon-efficient in order to meet 2012 carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions target, according to updated data published today by the European Environment Agency (EEA). The data also show that almost all manufacturers must reduce emissions to meet 2015 targets under European legislation for new passenger cars, based on average CO2 emissions for each manufacturer.

Home energy use is responsible overall for 25 % of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union (EU), according to a new analysis from the European Environment Agency (EEA). The report calculates emissions based on their 'end use', or the sector using the energy. Homes in the EU only emit 12 % of energy emissions directly, but this doubles when related emissions from power plants and district heating are factored in.

The thick short black lines indicate the combined effect of all emission drivers, i.e. the overall GHG emission trend during the period considered. Different data sources have been used for the calculation of carbon intensity, which may result in a high uncertainty of the results for this driver.
