Figure Total ammonium concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2009 draining to different sea regions of Europe
Concentrations are expressed as the average of annual mean concentrations. Up to 3-year gaps of missing values have been interpolated or extrapolated. Only complete series with no missing values after this interpolation/extrapolation are included (see indicator specificatios). The number of river monitoring stations included in the analysis per sea region is noted in brackets.

Figure Total ammonium concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2011 in different geographical regions of Europe
The data series per region are calculated as the average of the annual mean for river monitoring stations in the region. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of river monitoring stations included per geographical region is given in parentheses. If data on total ammonium are not available, data on ammonium are included into the data series.

Figure Total ammonium concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2011 draining to different sea regions of Europe
The sea region data series are calculated as the average of annual mean data from river monitoring stations in each sea region. The data thus represents rivers or river basins draining into that particular sea. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of river monitoring stations included per sea region is given in parentheses. If data on total ammonium are not available, data on ammonium are included into the data series.

GIS Map Application Total phosphorus in lakes
The map shows the mean annual concentration of total phosphorus (TP), expressed as milligrams of TP per litre of water, observed in lakes and reservoirs monitoring stations and reported by EEA member countries via WISE. For most countries the mean annual value is based on observations over the whole year, whereas some countries only collect samples during the growing season (due to ice cover in winter). Total phosphorus includes all phosphorus components in water: phosphate, dissolved organic phosphorus and particulate phosphorus in algal and bacterial cells, as well as in mineral particles (e.g. clay). High or increased (compared to reference condition) concentration of total phosphorus represents a risk to normal functioning of lake ecosystems, causing eutrophication with potentially harmful or toxic algal blooms in the surface waters, reduced biodiversity, and oxygen deficiency in the bottom waters. The purpose of the map is to provide an overview of the mean annual value of total phosphorus in lakes and reservoirs across Europe and to enable the user to compare values per country, River Basin District (RBD) or individual monitoring station, depending on the scale of visualisation. Historical data since 1993 can be displayed using the time slider.
