Article Dublin tackles the health impacts of air pollution
Martin Fitzpatrick is a Principal Environmental Health Officer in the air quality monitoring and noise unit of Dublin City Council, Ireland. He is also the Dublin contact point for a pilot project run by the European Commission DG Environment and the EEA aimed at improving the implementation of air legislation. We asked him how Dublin tackles the health problems linked to poor air quality.

The air implementation pilot project
The Air Implementation Pilot is a project undertaken jointly by the EEA and the European Commission. It is one of two pilot projects (the other one relates to waste management) called for by Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik at the June 2011 meeting of the EEA Management Board. Both projects seek to explore an enhanced role for the EEA in supporting the implementation of the European Union’s environment policy.

Publication Environmental indicator report 2012
Reliable, relevant, targeted and timely environmental information is an essential element in implementing environmental policy and management processes. Such information can come in many formats — with indicators being a long-established approach to distilling detailed information into trends that are robust and easily understandable by a broad audience.

Publication Spatial assessment of PM10 and ozone concentrations in Europe (2005)
This report presents particulate matter (PM10) and ground‑level ozone concentration maps covering the whole of Europe. The interpolated maps are based on a combination of measurement and regional modelling results. Using measured concentrations as a primary source of information, the report summarizes the methodologies and the methodological choices taken in order to derive such maps.

Article A matter of chemistry
The chemistry of our atmosphere is complex. The atmosphere contains layers with different densities and different chemical compositions. We asked Professor David Fowler from the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology of the Natural Environment Research Council in the United Kingdom, about the air pollutants and chemical processes in our atmosphere that impact our health and the environment.
